March 26, 2008--The audiovisual production company Orbita Max started filming March 8 in Namibia for the first Spanish film shot entirely in 3D for giant screen theaters, digital theaters, and conventional 35mm theaters. The film, with the working title The Magic Tale, tells the story of a girl’s fantastic travel to Africa, where she interacts with other children, wild animals, trees, and plants that show her the way to the world of imagination and to the meaning of life. The film will be released at the end of 2009, once the long postproduction process is finished.

March 18, 2008--The Giant Screen Cinema Association elected its new officers of the board at the European Film Expo held March 4-5 in London at the Science Museum and the British Film Institute theaters. The officers of the board are as follows: Toby Mensforth, Smithsonian Business Ventures, was elected Chair; and Doug King, Saint Louis Science Center, was elected Vice Chair. Both will serve two-year terms. Elected for one-year terms are Patricia Keighley, DKP 70MM, Inc., as Secretary; and Gordon Stalans, Tennessee Aquarium, as Treasurer. The Executive Committee will include the officers listed above plus one director from each of the three overall sectors (Exhibition, Production/Distribution, and Manufacturer/Supplier). From exhibition is Berend Reijnhoudt, Omniversum; from production/distribution is Mike Lutz, MacGillivray Freeman Films; and from manufacturer/supplier is Andrew Oran, Fotokem.

March 14, 2008--MacGillivray Freeman Films, producers of the blockbuster giant-screen hit Everest, will literally make a splash with the nationwide release of their first 3D film for IMAX theaters, Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk 3D. The timely new film debuted at an invitation-only premiere Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at the AMC Lincoln Square IMAX Theatre in New York City and opened in select cities on March 14 (in anticipation of World Water Day, March 22). Narrated by Robert Redford, with music and songs by the Grammy Award-winning Dave Matthews Band, the giant screen film combines exhilarating river-rafting action on America’s most iconic river with the first-ever IMAX 3D images of the Grand Canyon. The film is presented by Teva and supported by Kohler Co.
