Mark Brittell Leaves OMSI to Start Giant Screen Consulting

January 31, 2008--After 20 years at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) Mark Brittell is heading off on his own. With the creation of Giant Screen Consulting services Mark is now available to share his talents with the entire industry. During his career at the museum, Mark launched over 30 giant screen films, bringing over 3.5 million visitors to OMSI's IMAX theater. Working with multiple distributors, he has helped in an advisory capacity with the creation of many giant screen classics.

Darryl Hannah to Narrate 3D Entertainment's Dolphins and Whales 3D

January 24, 2008--Filmmakers Jean-Jacques and Francois Mantello (the Mantello Brothers) and film ambassador Jean-Michel Cousteau are pleased to announce that their new IMAX 3D theater film Dolphins and Whales 3D will feature narration by actress and environmentalist Daryl Hannah (Kill Bill: Vol. 1&2, Blade Runner). Beginning its theatrical run at IMAX 3D theaters on February 15, Dolphins and Whales 3D will invite audiences on a journey of discovery with these marine mammal tribes of the ocean.

U2 3D Premieres at Sundance; Film Opens in IMAX Theaters on January 23

January 22, 2008—3ality Digital and National Geographic premiered U2 3D at the Sundance Film Festival this past weekend. It is the first film for giant screen theaters to premiere at the prestigious festival, held in Park City, Utah. Attendees at the premiere and reception included all four members of the legendary Irish rock group, the filmmakers, politicians, Hollywood heavyweights, representatives of presenting sponsor Best Buy and distributor National Geographic, and U2 fans. Correction from previous post: U2 3D opens in 60 IMAX theaters on January 23 and then on digital 3D screens on February 15.

IMAX Signs Two-Theater Deal in the Philippines

January 22, 2008--IMAX Corporation and SM Prime Holdings, the largest mall operator in the Philippines, have announced an agreement to install two IMAX digital projection systems at shopping malls in the cities of Manila and Cebu. The deal follows the success of SM's first IMAX theater, which has been the highest-grossing screen in the country since it opened in 2006. Under the terms of the parties' agreement, the two IMAX digital theater systems are expected to be installed during the third and fourth quarters of 2009.

IMAX DMR Releases Gross $145 Million in 2007, Up 56 Percent Over 2006

January 16, 2008--IMAX Corporation generated $145 million for Hollywood releases in 2007, which is 56 percent higher than the $93 million that the IMAX theater network grossed during 2006. Hollywood films that played in IMAX theaters in 2007 included eight titles from four different studios, all of which were converted using the company's proprietary DMR technology in both 2D and IMAX 3D.

Sea Monsters and Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia Nominated for Visual Effects Society Awards

January 7, 2008 - Two giant screen films have been nominated for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Special Venue Project for the 6th annual Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards. The VES Awards recognize outstanding visual effects in over a dozen categories of film, television, commercials, and video games. The giant screen films nominated this year are Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia from Sky High Entertainment, with visual effects by Mario Couturier, Vincent Roberge, Richard Bergeron, and Martin L'Heureux (Studio Virtuel Concept), and Sea Monsters from National Geographic, with visual effects by Sean Phillips, Jack Geist, Robin Aristorenas, Mark Dubeau. Nominees were chosen Saturday, January 5, 2008, by numerous panels of VES members who viewed submissions at the FotoKem screening facilities in Burbank.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Science Station IMAX Theater to Close January 20

January 3, 2008--The Science Station board has announced that the IMAX theater will cease to operate as of January 20. The board emphasized that they and the staff are focused on improving the Science Station, delivering on its long standing mission to provide exciting hands on learning opportunities and science and math education outreach. “The board and staff made every effort to make the theater work but ultimately we had to make this very difficult decision.” said Dan Thies, President of the Science Station board. “The theater has not been profitable in recent years and we can no longer afford to subsidize it at the expense of our core mission.”

Boston's Museum of Science Mugar Omni Theater Reopens After Renovations

January 3, 2008—The newly renovated Mugar Omni Theater at the Museum of Science in Boston reopened December 22 after a $750,000 renovation that began on September 4. The renovation was financed by former trustee David Mugar. Renovations include a 420-panel Premium Seam Dome, programmable theater lighting—which includes an LED system—as well as a digital video projection system that accommodates a wide range of media, including live feeds of televised events. Theater seats and carpeting were replaced, while lobby walls received a fresh coat of paint and new flooring was added.

IMAX Signs Theater Deal with National Amusements

January 3, 2008--IMAX Corporation and National Amusements Inc., the US’s fifth largest theater operator, today announced IMAX's sale of the Feinstein IMAX Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island, to National Amusements. The IMAX theater had been owned and operated by IMAX Corporation since it opened in June, 2000. Under the terms of the sale, National Amusements assumed ownership and control of the theater effective close of business on December 31st, 2007.

Trustee of IMAX Senior Notes Seeks Judgement That Catalyst Has No Basis for Claims

January 3, 2008--IMAX Corporation announced today that on December 21, 2007, it received a summons and complaint from the trustee under the indenture  governing the company's senior notes, seeking a declaratory judgment confirming IMAX's position that The Catalyst Fund Limited Partnership II has no basis for its legal claims against IMAX under the Indenture.
