IMAX Theatre at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Goes 3D |
 January 5, 2010—The IMAX Theatre at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec, will be closed January 4-February 28, 2010, as it upgrades its theater with an IMAX 3D projection system, as well as a new sound system, screen, and seats. The theater will reopen in March. When it first opened in June 1989, it was the first theater in the world to combine the IMAX screen and the IMAX dome in the same room. Upon completion of the changes, it will be the only IMAX theater in North America to present 3D films on the IMAX screen and 2D films on the dome.

Stephen Low Captures the Historic Boeing 787 Flight for Legends of Flight |
 On December 15, 2009, at 10:27 am PST, the 787 Dreamliner took off from Boeing's Paine Field in Everett, Washington, for its historic first flight, etching its image indelibly on the future of commercial aviation. The flight lasted 3 hours and 6 minutes and landed safely at Boeing Field just south of Seattle at 1:33 pm. The 787 was flown by Chief Test Pilot Mike Carriker, who is also the lead character in Legends of Flight. Stephen Low and his production team were on hand to capture this historic event, which is the final sequence in Legends of Flight. |

Avatar Earns $13.6 Million in IMAX Theaters Its Opening Weekend |
 December 21, 2009--IMAX Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox today announced that James Cameron's Avatar grossed a record breaking $9.5 million from 178 IMAX theaters domestically from December 18 through December 20, 2009, registering approximately 13 percent of the film's total domestic gross of $73 million on less than 3 percent of the screens. IMAX theaters were operating at virtually full capacity all weekend, with many locations adding 3am and 6am shows to meet the high consumer demand. The IMAX release also posted a record international opening, generating an estimated total of approximately $4.1 million from 58 IMAX screens, for a per screen average of approximately $70,500. The film is scheduled to open on 25 additional IMAX screens internationally in the coming weeks, including in Japan and China. The worldwide IMAX opening weekend box office total is estimated to be $13.6 million as of the end of day Sunday, December 20, 2009.
