Kung Fu Panda Grosses $2.3 Million in Its First Weekend in IMAX Theaters

June 10, 2008--IMAX Corporation and DreamWorks Animation SKG have announced that Kung Fu Panda: The IMAX Experience opened with strong box office results at IMAX theaters over the three-day weekend from Friday June 6, through Sunday June 8. The film grossed $2.3 million on 89 domestic IMAX screens and six international IMAX screens, for a per screen average of approximately $24,000. The film will continue to open in international locations in the weeks ahead, ultimately playing on 36 international IMAX screens.

Wild Ocean 3D Selected as Finalist in Two Categories for the Wildscreen Festival

June 9, 2008--The Wildscreen International Wildlife and Environmental Film Festival has announced the finalists in this year’s prestigious Panda Awards, with the giant screen film Wild Ocean 3D nominated in two categories. Co-produced by Giant Screen Films and Yes/No Productions, Wild Ocean will be competing for the Best Music Award (Steve McNicholas and Luke Cresswell) and the Theatrical Award. The nomination panel met in May to watch all 440 film entries from 43 countries and identified 62 films that will go forward to the final jury in October, just prior to the festival. Kung Fu Panda Opens in 89 IMAX Theaters Today

June 6, 2008-- IMAX Corporation and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. have announced that the studio's highly anticipated summer movie Kung Fu Panda, starring Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Ian McShane, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogan, Lucy Liu, and David Cross, will open in 89 IMAX theaters domestically today in conjunction with the film's wide release. Kung Fu Panda is the first of five DreamWorks Animation films slated for release in IMAX theaters from June 2008 to May 2010. The film will also open in 37 IMAX theaters internationally during the days and weeks following the domestic launch. Kung Fu Panda has been digitally re-mastered with IMAX DMR technology.

The film was shown in a special digital 3D presentation on Sunday, May 25, and was followed by an in-depth panel discussion on water issues of the American Southwest. Joanna Haas Selected as Louisville Science Center's New Executive Director

May 27, 2008--Joanna E. Haas, director of Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, has been selected to succeed Gail Becker, who is retiring as executive director of the Louisville Science Center on August 31. Haas will start in her new position on September 2. “It’s been an honor to lead Carnegie Science Center for nearly five years,” said Haas. “And I am very excited to be coming to Louisville. The Louisville Science Center has a solid reputation and tremendously strong educational programs. I hope to continue to build on the excellent work of Gail Becker and her team.”

Science North Receives Federal Funding for a New Giant Screen Film about the Arctic

May 21, 2008--The Government of Canada has announced International Polar Year funding of $600,000 for the development of a new Science North IMAX film project. The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources, and the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs and Federal Interlocutor for Metis and Non-Status Indians, made the announcement last week as part of the Polar Continental Shelf Meeting (PCSM) in Ottawa. The PCSM supports a wide variety of Arctic scientific research ranging from archaeology, climatology, the geosciences, glaciology, space science and wildlife studies. Arctic Odyssey – Journey to the Top of the World is scheduled for release in 2010.

Breashears Reflects on Tragedy That Occurred While Filming Everest in PBS Documentary

May 12, 2008--In May 1996, the world-renowned climber and filmmaker David Breashears was making his third ascent up Mount Everest, leading an IMAX film team, when a swift and ferocious storm unexpectedly hit the mountain, trapping three exhausted climbing teams near the top of the world's highest peak. The IMAX film Everest was released by MacGillivray Freeman Films in 1998. In the Frontline special presentation Storm Over Everest, airing Tuesday, May 13, 2008, from 9 to 11 P.M. ET on PBS (check local listings), Breashears returns to summit Everest and to reflect on that fateful storm that resulted in the deaths of five climbers on the south side of the mountain. IMAX Corporation Reports First Quarter Financial Results

May 12, 2008--IMAX Corporation today reported that it recorded a net loss per diluted share of ($0.25) for the first quarter of fiscal 2008, compared to a net loss per diluted share of ($0.12) for the first quarter of fiscal 2007. At the same time, the company announced that its pending digital roll-out was on schedule and that it had added DreamWorks Animation's Magadascar 2 to the 2008 film slate.

May 8, 2008--The Stephen Low Company is currently in production on Ultimate Wave 3D (working title). Ultimate Wave will immerse giant screen audiences in the story of an ocean wave, and the lives it impacts and transforms. Ultimate Wave will be filmed in 3D for exhibition in IMAX 2D, IMAX 3D, and other giant screen theaters worldwide. The project is produced by The Stephen Low Company, directed by Stephen Low, and executive produced and distributed by K2 Communications. Sponsored by Suzuki Automotive and Quiksilver, Inc., the world’s leading outdoor sports lifestyle company, the film is scheduled for release in October 2009. Shooting begins this summer in South Africa, Western Australia, the Indian Ocean, and at a wave research tank in Europe.
