These samples would need to be contained in hermetically sealed vessels that could survive re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. This technological challenge tests the nerves of space probe operators who must orchestrate and program the movements of space craft from a distance of several hundred million miles away.

The pool is said to be close to Earth’s early oceans, and may reveal something about the origin of life.
