Session Descriptions

Future Directions
One of the few things certain in life is change. Our industry is no exception. As we face a less-than-clear future, how can the Giant Screen Cinema Association help its members to navigate forward? How can it help this industry to thrive and maintain its relevance? What should the GSCA look like in 5 or 10 years? Who will our members be? And what steps should we take now in order to get there? The GSCA board of directors plans to address these questions in its coming term as it works to shape our organization’s tactics and vision. As one of several means of getting input from membership, this professionally moderated forum will promote a discussion about the future of our industry and GSCA’s role in fostering that future. Don’t miss this opportunity to have a voice in shaping the GSCA’s future.

The Latest in Digital Capture: Capture Tools for the Giant Screen
Moderated by Daniel Ferguson, director of Jerusalem 3D.
Presenters include Keith Melton (director), Andrew Oran (FotoKem), Michael Mansouri (Radiant Images), Ted Schilowitz (RED), Peter Chang (Golden Gate 3D), Marty Mueller (Converging Concepts).
Calling all giant screen filmmakers: Get a hands-on look at the latest digital capture tools used in films like Titans of the Ice Age, Mysteries of the Unseen World, Flight of the Butterflies, Jerusalem, and Panama: A Land Divided, a World United. This session will be broken into two parts: a panel discussion with filmmakers, vendors, and post-production supervisors on the application of the newest tools (featuring behind-the-scenes footage from giant screen films), followed by three concurrent workshops where participants get a first-hand look at the new Sony F65 cameras on Marty Mueller's Converging Concepts 3D rig, the RED Epics on the 3ality and Screenplane 3D rigs, and the Nikon D800-E cameras on the camblock motion control system. This session is sponsored by Radiant Images, RED, Golden Gate 3D, Converging Concepts, Sony, and 3ality.

New Realities in Cross-Platform Releases

Moderated by Paul Fraser, Blaze Digital Cinema Works
How are digital media and technologies enabling multiple platform releases, from a single production to many different media? A giant screen film may now be distributed to a variety of platforms, including giant screen film theaters, digital flat screen and dome theaters of all sizes, Fulldome, television, tablets, PDA’s, etc. For each film project we examine, the producer/distributor and a theater that played the film will weigh in. Our content panelists will explain the investment and creative decision, and the benefits and challenges of planning, capturing, and releasing to multiple platforms. This session's theater panelists will comment on their expectations and concerns.
Panelists:
  • Phil Streather, Principal Large Format
  • Chip Bartlett, MacGillivray Freeman Films
  • Jonathan Barker, SK Films

Theater Forum: Issues and Opportunities
Moderated by Kim Nickels, Putnam Museum
Join your fellow exhibitors for an open forum discussion on issues facing giant screen theaters, and the opportunities we have to address them. We will brainstorm on topics such as the impact of IMAX screens in a neighboring multiplex, how to differentiate your giant screen theater in the marketplace, marketing—what’s working and what’s not, theater attendance trends—both documentary and Hollywood films, the impact of in-home theater systems and personal devices, and booth operations and staffing in the digital world. This will be an interactive session including real-time tweets from the audience. We'll also collect topics and questions from theater operators before the conference. This is truly an open forum—nothing is “off the table.”

Making the Case for Digital

Moderated by Paul Fraser, Blaze Digital Cinema Works
The majority of museum theater operators who have not transitioned to digital want to learn from their peers who have. In a reprise of the session presented at the GSCA fall 2012 conference, representatives of three digitally equipped giant screen theaters will present their “before/after” case study. Each presenter will share data and helpful insights. They’ll explain their impetus for going digital, the decision-making process, options considered, what they chose—and why. They’ll offer a post mortem on their experience and results to date. Q&A will follow.
Panelists:
  • Jon Loos, Washington Pavilion of Arts & Sciences, Sioux Falls, SD (converted from 8/70 film to DCI-compliant digital—single projector, Barco—for the CineDome theater
  • Juleen Welsch Ayres, World Golf Hall of Fame & IMAX Theater, St. Augustine, FL (converted from IMAX 15/70 to IMAX Digital, flat screen theater)
  • Barry Crean, Telus Spark - The New Science Centre, Calgary, Alberta (closed 8/70 dome in old science center building; opted for digital fulldome in new science center)
