Sessions and Materials

Once you have logged in with your GSCA user name and password, links to the videos and presenter materials will appear below the session descriptions. Sessions include the following:

Tales from the Trenches: First-Time Filmmakers Share Their Lessons Learned

  • Moderator: Myles Connolly, p.g.a., 360-Media
  • Panelists: Peter Chang, Golden Gate 3D; Michael Dalton-Smith, Digital Crossing Films; Susan Todd, Arise Media/Archipelago Films; Andrew Young, Arise Media/Archipelago Films

Even if you’ve worked in other formats, there’s a lot to learn before you start developing a project for the giant screen. In this session, filmmakers who are new to the format  share not only the lessons they learned as they made their first giant screen films, but also what they wish they had known. From production to distribution to exhibition, find out how the giant screen industry differs from other formats.

The Business of the Giant Screen

  • Presenter: James Hyder, LF Examiner

What’s in it for you? We examine the business model and what’s in it for all stakeholders, including filmmakers, distributors, and exhibitors. James Hyder shares industry data, examines trends, considers the risks versus the opportunities, reviews historical and commonly accepted approaches to film distribution, and explores new tactics that are changing the status quo.

Understanding the Audience

  • Moderator: Mary Jane Dodge, MacGillivray Freeman Films
  • Panelists: Mark Bretherton, December Media Distribution; Mark Katz, Giant Screen Films/D3D Cinema; Julie La Roche, Montreal Science Centre; Greg MacGillivray, MacGillivray Freeman Films; John Wickstrom, Cosmic Picture

In the First-time Filmmakers session, giant screen novices shared their lessons learned. In this session you hear from the veterans—producers, distributors and exhibitors—on what they’ve learned throughout their careers in the industry. They share their understanding of and relationship with the audience, their own successes and failures, and advice on what it takes to have longevity in the industry.

The Art of Storytelling for the Giant Screen

  • Moderator: Phil Streather, Principal Large Format
  • Panelists: Luke Cresswell, Yes/No Productions; Daniel Ferguson, Cosmic Picture; Wendy MacKeigan, SK Films

The best giant screen films are more than just really big, beautiful images. It’s the stories we tell with those images that inspire and resonate with audiences. But what makes storytelling on the giant screen unique? How do filmmakers approach scriptwriting? How is shooting, editing, and scoring different from other media? Which topics and genres have worked, which ones haven’t, and which ones should be considered? And how does new technology, like drones and motion capture, affect storytelling? Veteran filmmakers share how they use cameras, writing, editing, music, sound, and other technology to tell a story that audiences remember and that can even inspire action.

Technology and Art Tools for Giant Screen Filmmaking

  • Moderators: Brian Eimer, ImagesInSound; Rick Gordon, RPG Productions
  • Panelists: Sam Cardon, Composer; Phil Streather, Principal Large Format; Sean Phillips, MacLeod Enterprises

Giant screen films are lauded for their premier images and sound, but how do filmmakers achieve that immersive, you-are-there quality? This in-theater session will give you a peek inside the giant screen technical toolbox. We’ll examine creative approaches to sound design, music composition and music delivery, digital capture and lens options, shooting native 3D vs. converting in post, formatting for the dome, and more to ensure films exceed audience expectations and keep them coming back for the giant screen experience.
