The core purpose of the Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA®) is to advance the business of producing and presenting educational giant screen and immersive cinema experiences globally.
GSCA's membership includes more than 260 organizations in nearly 30 countries. Members are engaged in the production, distribution, and exhibition of giant screen film experiences and include giant screen filmmakers, distributors, theaters, suppliers, manufacturers, and students from around the world.
GSCA was founded in 2006 with the unification of the Large Format Cinema Association (LFCA) and the Giant Screen Theater Association (GSTA).
The Association typically holds two annual events. The two-day Film Expo in February/March is focused on film screenings. The four-day International Conference and Trade Show in September includes film screenings, the industry’s only trade show, professional development, and the annual GSCA Achievement Awards. Other events are held periodically, i.e. the Giant Screen Filmmaker Symposium in March 2015, the 2011 GSCA Asia Film Expo and the 2008 Greater Potential of Giant Screen Experiences: Connecting Society with Science Symposium. GSCA also hosts Museum Cinema Day at the Association of Science Technology Centers (ASTC) annual conference.
GSCA holds its annual Achievement Awards during the International Conference and Trade Show in September. Film award categories include Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Film for Learning, Best Film-Short Subject, and Best Film-Feature Length. Marketing Awards include Best Educational Program, Best Film Launch by a Theater, Best Marketing Campaign by a Distributor, Best Theater Launch, and the Big Idea Award.
Certified Giant Screen® and Bigger. Bolder. Better.®
GSCA developed the Certified Giant Screen program “Bigger. Bolder. Better.” to differentiate the giant screen experience and support members in their efforts to communicate and market that differentiation.
A survey of 4,700 consumers conducted by the GSCA, online and in theaters, revealed that people want movies on a bigger screen. Nearly 70% said knowing they could see a film on a “certified giant screen” would impact their theatergoing decision. This new certification will allow theaters to display the GSCA’s trademarked certification icons and “Bigger. Bolder. Better.” tagline in all the theater’s marketing materials to help further differentiate it from a crowded marketplace of new projection alternatives.
To receive certification, a theater must meet specific technical criteria laid out by the GSCA. Giant screens are at least:
- 70 feet (21.3 meters) wide, or
- 3,100 square feet (288 square meters) in total area for flat screens, or
- 60 feet (18.3 meters) in diameter for domes, and
- Place all seating within one screen width of the screen plane

Who can participate in the program?
The program is available to GSCA members in good standing (i.e. dues have been paid) whose theaters qualify for GSCA’s Certified Giant Screen designation, which is listed above.
A map of theaters participating in the Bigger. Bolder. Better. program can be found here. This map is updated regularly as more theaters join the program: Participating Theaters
A list of theaters that are eligible for giant screen certification is available here. This list is current per the data GSCA has as of October 13, 2010.
