September 30, 2016—The Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA) is very pleased to announce that renowned filmmaker and IMAX co-inventor and co-founder Graeme Ferguson is the recipient of its inaugural Outstanding Achievement Award. Mr. Ferguson will accept the award at the GSCA Achievement Awards on the evening of Tuesday, October 4, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
September 29, 2016—D3D Cinema is pleased to announce a state-of-the-art digital upgrade to Arizona Science Center’s five-story giant screen theater. Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the newly updated theater has been rebranded as the Irene P. Flinn Giant Screen Theater. D3D completed the upgrade in mid-September, replacing the 15/70 3D projection system with a state-of-the-art dual 4K digital 3D projection system, including premium 5.1 surround sound audio.
September 29, 2016—The Denver Museum of Nature & Science celebrated the grand re-opening of the Gates Planetarium on September 19. The Planetarium temporarily closed earlier this month to install upgraded projection equipment, making the experience sharper and more vibrant. Evans & Sutherland (E&S) installed an 8-channel Digistar system connected to eight Barco F35 2560 x 1600 resolution projectors with E&S’ proprietary auto alignment and auto blending systems. This stunning, full dome display boasts well over 20 million unique pixels.
September 28, 2016—After more than a decade of producing and distributing large format films, 3D Entertainment Films has built a substantial library of high performing titles. Productions include: Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Secret Ocean 3D, Dolphins And Whales 3D, Sharks 3D, Ocean Wonderland 3D, Kenya: Animal Kingdom 3D and Air Racers 3D. Their library was expanded to include distribution of the highly acclaimed Sea Rex 3D: Journey to a Prehistoric World co-produced by N3D Land Productions and Mantello Brothers Productions.
September 21, 2016—September 12th at IBC 2016 in Amsterdam, marked the second stop of Ang Lee’s “whole shebang” world tour of his upcoming release Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. The movie is set to create new milestone in cinematic presentation quality using the latest technology to deliver stunningly crisp, realistic images and an immersive, intimate experience. In the process of deciding what format to shoot and which formats to release they ended up going all-in; 3D at 120 frames per second (per eye), 4k resolution, 6P laser illumination, 28 foot-lamberts (per eye) with a high dynamic range version too. September 16, 2016—The Milwaukee Public Museum’s (MPM) Dome Theater and Planetarium will be the first planetarium in the world to debut Digistar 6 technology on Saturday, September 17. This ground breaking dome technology will replace the giant screen 15/70 film system, which was once the gold standard for giant screen projection.
