September 12, 2022—After years in limbo, the fate of the IMAX theater in downtown Des Moines is clear: It will not re-open. The Blank IMAX Dome Theater at the Science Center of Iowa has been closed for more than four years since it was hit with flood waters. The 2018 storm caused millions of dollars in damage to the theater's specialized equipment and led to a lawsuit over insurance claims. The board of directors directed staff to think of other ways to use the IMAX space, but the board ultimately decided it should not be used as a theater. Science Center leadership is still finalizing plans, and they do not expect to have an announcement for a few years. January 9, 2020—The Science Center of Iowa has announced the IMAX theater may never reopen after flooding caused the popular attraction to close in June 2018. The Science Center has been battling with its insurance company to get a settlement for more than $3 million in damages. Read more
