Royal BC Museum to Remain Open After Controversial Plan Is Halted

July 8, 2022—We shared news in May that the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, British Columbia, would be closing on September 6 of this year as the province invested in building a new facility that was to open in 2030. After strong backlash to the costly and controversial plan, Premier John Horgan has pledged to consult with the public to determine how to proceed. In the meantime, the Royal BC Museum will remain open indefinitely. Read the full article about the Royal BC Museum plan in The Globe and Mail.

Royal BC Museum to Close in September as Province Invests in New Building Opening in 2030

May 16, 2022—The Royal BC Museum in Victoria, British Columbia, will close its doors on September 6, 2022, as the province makes a historic $789 million investment to build a safer, more inclusive, and accessible modern facility. The modernized provincial museum is expected to open in 2030 and will reflect the experiences and perspectives of all who contributed to B.C.’s history. BC Archives services will not be disrupted and will remain open at the downtown site until it moves to its new permanent home at the collections and research building in 2025. IMAX Victoria, the museum’s gift shop, and the food trucks located at the museum will stay open through early 2023.

Paul Wild Leaves IMAX Victoria After Royal BC Museum Operational Restructure

May 25, 2021—The Royal BC Museum in Victoria, BC, Canada, acquired the IMAX Victoria theater from Destination Cinema Inc. (DCI) in late August 2020. The museum recently restructured its operations and concluded that it would no longer continue with the Head of Theatre (Theatre Director) position. As such, after 17+ years, Paul Wild left IMAX Victoria on April 27, this year. Paul's successful tenure in Victoria bore fruit not only for DCI, but for the industry as a whole, with its annual attendance firmly establishing Victoria as a top tier theater. In addition to many successful film runs and marketing campaigns, Victoria also developed the giant screen network’s most successful membership/loyalty program, the Annual Pass Holder Program, with over 20,000 members and annual revenues of over $1 million (to the end of 2019).

IMAX Victoria Welcomes Seven Millionth Visitor

July 26, 2016—If you want to see Paul Wild blush, just call him the Seven Million Dollar Man the next time you go see a movie at Imax Victoria. The theatre housed in the Royal B.C. Museum set an attendance milestone this month when it welcomed its seven-millionth moviegoer. “It’s all teamwork,” said Wild, crediting his staff with achieving the record-breaking numbers at the Belleville Street theatre, which opened in June of 1998.
