September 11, 2018–The Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA) is pleased to announce Evans & Sutherland and Christie will demonstrate a technical preview of a new digital dome RGB laser system at GSCA’s Dome Day event on September 24, 2018, at McWane Science Center in Birmingham, Alabama. The dome system was chosen by the GSCA Technical Committee after a request for proposal process.

Hosted by the Technical Committee, the technical preview will feature new Christie 4K pure RGB laser projectors that have comparable coverage to 15/70 film systems but with significantly higher fidelity. The three projector system is fully compliant with GSCA’s Digital Immersive Giant Screen Specifications (DIGSS 2.0), delivers up to Rec. 2020 color space for superior color depth and image quality, and offers high frame rate playback capability of up to 120 frames per second.

Dome Day will feature the digital dome demonstration as well as presentations of new films on the digital system in the morning and in the afternoon and 15/70 films on the Science Center’s IMAX film projection system. Content presented during the technical preview will include 8K x 6K spherical remastering, 8K content from 15/70 film and 8K digital cameras, and the results of the 8K Digital Camera Comparison conducted by GSCA. Attendees will also see examples of real-time data presentation and new content created for 180 x 360 degree domes.

“As we’ve done for the past several years, the GSCA will show a comprehensive demonstration of cutting-edge digital technology during Dome Day at the Conference,” says Tim Hazlehurst, Co-Chair of the GSCA Technical Committee. “We invited vendors to demonstrate their latest advances in dome display systems. Evans & Sutherland and Christie answered the call and were selected. They will present a partial dome system using the latest hardware and software from E&S, coupled with a technical preview of brand new RGB laser projectors from Christie—never before seen in a dome. We’re thrilled about this must-see event at the conference.”

“For 15/70 dome theaters that want to convert to digital and continue to present giant screen content, Evans & Sutherland and Christie provide a dome solution with nearly identical image coverage to their existing film systems, with incredible sharpness, contrast, and color richness. The system also offers the industry’s most advanced suite of additional capabilities including auto alignment and blending, 4K video input, live presentation mode, and more. E&S combined with Christie RGB laser projection technology offers the highest quality available on a giant screen dome,” says Kirk Johnson, President of E&S.

“We’re thrilled to partner with Evans & Sutherland and the GSCA to bring a technical preview of Christie’s never-before-seen 4K pure RGB laser system to Dome Day,” says Larry Paul, Executive Director of Technology and Custom Solutions, Christie. “Coupled with Evans & Sutherland’s auto-alignment and blending solutions along with 8K content, Christie’s RGB pure laser solution will demonstrate truly immersive color and resolution for domes.”
