After more than two years of refurbishment supported by an RMB 1 billion investment, the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (SSTM) has completed the installation of the world’s first CINITY Giant Screen LED 3D theatre. The new CINITY LED direct-view system replaces the museum’s original IMAX 3D projection system and represents a major milestone in giant-screen cinema technology.
The CINITY LED giant screen measures 23.68 meters wide by 18 meters high and features a 2 mm-thick, 26% perforated LED screen. The system complies with DCI CTP 1.4.3 standards and delivers CINITY LED 4K resolution. Designed specifically for giant-screen cinema, the system supports 3D presentation, High Frame Rate (HFR), Ultra High Brightness (UHB), Wide Color Gamut (WCG), and High Dynamic Range (HDR), delivering exceptional image quality and immersion.
On January 9, 2026, the CINITY 3D system officially premiered with Horse Power 3D, co-produced by China Media Group (CMG), Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, and other partners, and produced by Plimsoll. The opening event also featured a screening of Great Bear Rainforest 3D, produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films.
“The SSTM team is incredibly proud to bring this breathtaking new experience to our museum,” said Mr. Ni, Curator of Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. “This CINITY LED giant screen allows us to inspire millions of visitors through the wonder of science and natural history, creating meaningful experiences for future generations.”
Professor Li, Chief Technology Officer of China Film Group, added: “We are pleased to have developed and installed the world’s first DCI-compliant giant-screen LED cinema featuring a 4:3 aspect ratio and a full-screen acoustically transparent LED display. We thank SSTM for its visionary partnership and leadership within the China science center community. This installation sets a new benchmark for premium giant-screen cinema experiences in Shanghai and across China.”
SSTM warmly welcomes GSCA members and industry colleagues to experience the world’s first CINITY Giant Screen LED 3D theatre. Visitors are also invited to attend SSTM’s Film Expo on 24 May 2026 and the Shanghai International Film Festival on 12 June 2026.
