Overview of the Opportunity

  • Shanghai Science and Technology Museum (SSTM) completed major renovation.
  • Installed 78’ x 60’ (23.68m x 18m) CINITY 3D LED giant screen (4:3 format, slightly curved).
  • SSTM in association with GSCA is presenting the world’s first Giant Screen Film Event presented on an LED screen
  • SSTM Forum Grand Opening May 23
  • SSTM Film Expo May 24 – June 2
  • Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) June 12 – 21
  • GSCA members are welcome to submit films to be shown in the Science Forum and the SIFF
  • Up to 10 GSCA Films will be shown
  • Automatic eligibility for SIFF Science & Technology Section.
  • Goal: Showcase GSCA member content on cutting-edge LED technology to Chinese museum leaders.

Selection Process

  • February 28: Screener + full script due
  • SSTM/SIFF will select final films
  • No rights paperwork required at initial submission stage.
  • If selected → mastering materials required
  • Opportunity available only to GSCA Members

Delivery & Logistics

  • Send 1080p file (Hightail preferred) to Tammy Barrett
  • Include full script in Mandarin
  • Files sent to Tammy → forwarded to William → designated SSTM contact.
  • Beijing office will facilitate download/upload if firewall issues arise.
  • Submit early (avoid last-minute file access issues).
  • Tammy will confirm receipt of all materials.

Technical Specifications

Format

  • 4:3 aspect ratio
  • 2D or 3D accepted (3D preferred by SSTM)
  • Mandarin version required

LED Considerations

  • LED screen is unforgiving with:
    • Low-light imagery
    • Noise
    • 8-bit color (strongly discouraged)
  • Prefer:
    • 10-bit minimum (12–16 bit ideal)
    • Careful QC of darker footage
  • Dolby Atmos Sound

Strong suggestion: Submit tricky low-light test footage for QC consideration.

Mastering

Audience / Market Impact

  • Major Chinese Museum directors and curators expected.
  • Similar scale to 2023 Beijing event.
  • GSCA will make formal presentation.
  • Potential award exposure through SIFF.
  • Positioning opportunity for GSCA as global industry leader. 

Other Information

  • Mandarin narration is essential
  • SSTM prefers 3D films and will prioritize in final selection.
  • We will confirm if 2D will be accepted.

Technical & Quality Control

  • Is there a formal Quality Control process before final mastering?
    • Can sample footage be tested?
    • Can rehearsals be conducted and shared remotely?
  • Is there a designated technical contact at CINITY for distributor-level questions?
  • Confirm:
    • Preferred frame rate(s)
    • Bit depth minimum requirement: 10bit dpx or MOV and pro-res at least 10bit files. 12bit at any format, or 16bit tiff preferred.

  • How many CINITY venues are currently operating in:
    • Four CINITY Dual Projection systems have been installed:
      1. China Science & Technology Museum 29m wide screen
      2. Henan Science & Technology Museum 26m wide screen
      3. Anhui Science & Technology Museum 22.5m wide screen
      4. Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum 30m wide screen
    • Shanghai Science and Technology Museum: CINTY LED 23.68m wide screen
    • Three more CINITY LED to be installed in 2026
    • 75 CINITY LED Commercial Theaters by January 2026
    • 175 CINITY LED Theaters in China by January 2027
  • Is SSTM the only 4:3 LED installation in the museum sector?
    • CINITY LED can run any aspect ratio, but for this event, only films that fill the screen with 1.43:1 aspect ratio will be included.
  • Are other films (non-GSCA) being programmed? If so, how many?

Licensing & Commercial

  • Confirm licensing structure:
    • Flat fee ranges typical for SSTM
    • Typical term length
      • Most have 12-month contracts
    • If a film masters in CINITY format, is that master usable in:
      • Multiple venues?
        • Yes, if the CINITY LED system has the matching aspect ratio capacity
      • Or single-site license only?

GSCA Participation

Can we obtain Attendee list and Museum director list in advance? We will ask SSTM. Normally, Chinese museums do not provide.
