Sci-Port Discovery Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, Upgrading to IMAX with Laser

""October 28, 2022—The Goodman IMAX Dome Theater at Sci-port Discovery Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, is closed for construction to replace the current IMAX film projection system to IMAX with Laser. The IMAX Dome will show major motion pictures starting in November, such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avatar: The Way of the Water, in addition to continuing to offer educational documentaries. Ancient Caves, by Oceanic Research Group and MacGillivray Freeman Films, is the first film scheduled for November 2022.

Greg MacGillivray Named 2022 Historian of the Year by Historic Hotels of America

October 28, 2022—Historic Hotels of America has named Greg MacGillivray of MacGillivray Freeman Films recipient of its 2022 Historian of the Year Award. This award is presented to an individual for making a unique contribution in the research and presentation of history and whose work has encouraged a wide discussion and greater understanding of the history and the diverse heritages and cultures of our nation and the world. The award will be presented at the 2022 Historic Hotels Awards of Excellence Ceremony and Gala at the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa in Point Clear, Alabama, on November 17.

Winners of the GSCA Film Awards Announced at GSCA Conference

September 29, 2022—The Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA) is pleased to announce the winners of its Film Awards, recognizing excellence in giant screen filmmaking. The awards were presented the evening of Wednesday, September 28, at the GSCA 2022 International Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee, during a ceremony held at the Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Theater. As the first in-person GSCA International Conference since September 2019, awards were presented for films released in 2022 as well as for each year the conference was not held during the pandemic. Eligible films are submitted by GSCA member distributors and voted on by GSCA member organizations. IMAX Corporation, sponsor of the awards gala, presented the IMAX Hall of Fame Award, which goes to a giant screen film that is at least 10 years old and is selected by vote of the IMAX theater network.

Tennessee Aquarium IMAX Theater Has a Giant Screen-Raising Party in Advance of Hosting GSCA Conference

""September 19, 2022—The Tennessee Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater was closed September 15-16 for a monumental undertaking: the replacement of its six-story tall, 89- foot-wide screen. In preparation for hosting the Giant Screen Cinema Association’s (GSCA) annual international conference at the end of September, the Aquarium partnered with the IMAX Corporation to replace the existing six-year-old screen so the theater would look its best for the international event, which draws giant-screen filmmakers, distributors, theaters, suppliers, manufacturers, and students from around the world.

The IMAX Theater at the Science Center of Iowa Will Not Reopen

""September 12, 2022—After years in limbo, the fate of the IMAX theater in downtown Des Moines is clear: It will not re-open. The Blank IMAX Dome Theater at the Science Center of Iowa has been closed for more than four years since it was hit with flood waters. The 2018 storm caused millions of dollars in damage to the theater's specialized equipment and led to a lawsuit over insurance claims. The board of directors directed staff to think of other ways to use the IMAX space, but the board ultimately decided it should not be used as a theater. Science Center leadership is still finalizing plans, and they do not expect to have an announcement for a few years. Jonathan Frederick Named New CEO of Marbles Kids Museum

""September 7, 2022—The Board of Directors of Marbles Kids Museum is pleased to announce it has selected Jonathan Frederick as the museum’s new Chief Executive Officer. Frederick was selected through a national search conducted in partnership with the nonprofit consulting firm moss+ross. Alex Hanstein Takes Helm As New Executive Director at Challenger Learning Center

""September 7, 2022—Alan Hanstein has been appointed as the executive director for the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee (CLCTLH). Hanstein took the helm on June 10, 2022. The educational center is the K-12 outreach arm for the joint engineering college. Hanstein was chosen from a handful of candidates after a national search. In the new role, he will be responsible for all aspects of center operation, including its IMAX Theatre, Planetarium Theatre, Camp Challenger, educational school programs (field trips), lecture series, public programs and more. Hanstein has served on the CLCTLH board for nearly 20 years and is a past chair. He succeeds Michelle Personette, who stepped down in February after two decades in the position.
